Filming in the Imperial Valley: A Collaboration with Kinescope and Centinela Media

Partnering with Kinescope: Drone Operations and Film Production in the Imperial Valley

Last summer, Centinela Media had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Kinescope, a Germany-based production company, on a documentary highlighting the challenges of water scarcity in the Colorado River. The film explores the types of crops grown by Imperial Valley farmers, the drought’s impact on native communities living near the river, and the ripple effects of water rights policies.

Kinescope approached us because they needed a U.S.-based, Part-107-certified drone operator to capture stunning aerial footage of the Imperial Valley. Fortunately, Centinela Media met their requirements, and we were excited to contribute our expertise to such an important project. Being FAA-certified meant we could legally operate drones for commercial purposes in the United States, and we were ready to deliver breathtaking visuals of this unique region.

From Drone Pilot to Assistant Director

What started as a simple drone project quickly expanded into a much larger role. While coordinating gear and logistics via email, we received unexpected news from Kinescope: their assistant director was unable to join the production due to illness. Recognizing our familiarity with the Imperial Valley and our professional network, the filmmakers invited us to step in as assistant director.

Our responsibilities grew to include filming, planning, translating, and scouting. What was initially planned as a two-day shoot transformed into an intense two-week project spanning the Imperial Valley, Mexicali (Baja California), Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. It was a demanding yet rewarding experience, requiring 16-hour workdays and navigating uncharted locations to capture compelling footage.

The Film’s Journey: "Where the Water Goes"

After two weeks of filming, we successfully delivered all footage and audio files to Kinescope’s director. The project, titled “Where the Water Goes,” has since been sold to a German television network and is currently being broadcast across Germany and other European countries. Seeing our work come to life and hearing positive feedback from audiences overseas has been incredibly rewarding.

Collaborating with Kinescope reaffirmed Centinela Media’s mission to connect with global production companies and provide top-tier services, from certified drone operations to film direction. Whether you're looking for breathtaking aerial shots or a local partner with production expertise in the Imperial Valley, Centinela Media is ready to bring your vision to life.
